FAQ — JB Consulting Firm

Question 1

What areas does JB Consulting serve?

Accepted Answer

I am based in Sioux City, Iowa and have deep roots in the Siouxland community. I primarily serve nonprofits, small businesses, and individuals in the Siouxland region (Sioux City, Iowa and surrounding areas). Many of my grant writing and strategic consulting engagements are conducted remotely, so I work with organizations across Iowa and the broader region as well.

Question 2

How much does a consultation cost?

Accepted Answer

I offer a free initial consultation to discuss your needs and determine whether it's a good fit. Ongoing engagement fees vary based on the scope and type of service. I'll provide a clear proposal before any work begins with no surprises.

Question 3

How do I get started?

Accepted Answer

The easiest way to get started is to schedule a Strategic Discovery Session through my contact page. You can also take my 2-minute service quiz to get a personalized recommendation for which service is right for your organization.

Question 4

What makes JB Consulting different from other consultants?

Accepted Answer

I bring a rare combination of legal expertise, nonprofit leadership experience, and a genuine commitment to the Siouxland community. With over 850 grants written and $500 million secured, my track record speaks for itself. But what clients consistently say is that it's my warmth, care, and genuine investment in their success that sets me apart.

Question 5

What is fractional executive leadership?

Accepted Answer

A fractional executive is an experienced senior leader (CEO, COO, Executive Director) who works with your organization on a part-time or project basis. This gives you access to high-level leadership expertise without the cost of a full-time hire. It is ideal for organizations in transition, growth phases, or those that need strategic guidance without a full-time commitment.

Question 6

How long does a strategic plan take?

Accepted Answer

A typical strategic planning engagement takes 3–6 months from kickoff to final plan delivery. This includes stakeholder engagement, environmental scanning, goal-setting workshops, and plan development. I can also provide ongoing implementation support after the plan is complete.

Question 7

Can you help with both grant writing and grant management?

Accepted Answer

Yes. I can support the full grant lifecycle, from identifying opportunities and writing proposals to managing reporting requirements and maintaining funder relationships. Many clients engage me on an ongoing retainer basis to manage their entire grants program.

Question 8

Do you work with small businesses or just nonprofits?

Accepted Answer

I work with both. While a significant portion of my work is with nonprofits, I also serve small businesses seeking strategic consulting, operational guidance, or legal services. My background as a lawyer makes me particularly well-suited to serve businesses navigating legal and strategic challenges.

Question 9

What engagement models do you offer?

Accepted Answer

I offer project-based engagements (a defined scope with a clear deliverable), retainer arrangements (ongoing monthly support), and interim/fractional leadership roles. I'll recommend the model that best fits your needs and budget during the initial consultation.

Question 10

Can we work together remotely?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Many of my engagements are conducted fully or partially remotely. I use video conferencing, shared documents, and collaborative tools to work effectively with clients across Iowa and beyond. For local clients, I'm also happy to meet in person.

Question 11

How quickly can you start?

Accepted Answer

Availability varies depending on current engagements. In many cases, I can begin within 2 to 4 weeks of an initial consultation. For urgent needs such as an interim leadership situation, I do my best to accommodate faster timelines. Reach out and I'll let you know what's possible.
