Top 7 Nuggets of Fundraising Wisdom

The following list, in no particular order, represents some of the most poignant insights into the nonprofit fundraising world:

1. People give to people, not organizations. Fundraising is built on relationships—personal connections drive generosity.

2. Donors don’t give because your organization has needs; they give because you solve problems. Focus on impact. Show how their support changes lives.

3. The #1 reason people don’t give? They were never asked.

Don’t assume—extend the invitation. Many are willing, but they need to be asked.

4. "Successful fundraising happens when the right person asks the right person for the right amount, for the right cause, at the right time, in the right way." - Jerry Panas Thoughtful strategy and timing make all the difference.

5. Never say “no” on behalf of a donor. Let them decide. You might be surprised who steps up.

6. Strong donor relationships require intentional, consistent engagement. Every major gift is built on trust—more personal interaction leads to deeper commitment.

7. If you ask for money, you’ll often get advice. If you ask for advice, you’ll usually get money. Involve donors in the mission, and ask for their ideas.
